BRISTOL, R.I.- The Roger Williams University baseball team defeated Mass Maritime Academy, 11-3, Sunday, to win the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Championship. RWU freshman Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Porter scored the first run on Sunday in the second inning, reaching base after getting hit by a pitch and advancing on a fielder's choice before freshman Justin Reyes (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled to bring him home.
Mass Maritime tied the score at 1-1 in its next at bat, when senior Anthony Barrett (Bridgewater, Mass.) hit a two-out double to score sophomore Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.).
The Hawks maintained their pressure, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth, bringing the score to 7-1.
Two Mass Maritime runs in the sixth were answered in the bottom of the inning with the game's first home run – a two-out solo shot to center field by junior Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.). Mass Maritime was unable to score again as RWU junior James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.), who relieved starter Brian Hurld (South Boston, Mass.) after four, struck-out two and forced a fly out in the top of the seventh.
Sophomore Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) earned the win with his work in the eighth and sophomore Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) finished the game keeping the Buccaneers scoreless in the ninth.
Buccaneers starting freshman pitcher Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) suffered the loss, giving up five runs in 4.0 innings.
RWU tallied three more runs in the eighth inning, including a two-run home run by Porter. For the tournament, Porter went five-for-eight, knocked-in seven RBI and hit two homeruns.
RWU advanced to Sunday's championship game with a 7-1 win Saturday over Brandeis University. The two tournament wins improve the Hawks' record to 34-12. Mass Maritime finishes the season 22-14.
