BRISTOL, R.I.- Roger Williams University junior Jared Czarnski (Shelton, Conn.) began his competition at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling National Championships Friday, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, facing No. 7 Tyler Jentz (Hortonville, Wisc.) of Coe College.
Wrestling at 174, Czarneski, boasting a 32-9 record, battled Jentz throughout the contest, falling in the end by a 4-1 decision. Jentz improves to 37-8 on the season and advances to face Ithaca freshman David Priest (Douglassville, Pa.) in the second round.
Meanwhile Czarneski moves to the consolation bracket where he meets a tough draw in No. 2 Eric Bath (Pulaski, Wisc.) from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Bath, a 2006-07 All-American, suffered a huge upset in the first round, falling to Priest earlier in the day, 7-3.
Bath proved too strong for Czarneski, though a tight contest it was. A 7-4 decision ended Czarneski's run in the tournament and propelled Bath into the next round. Bath would eventually take fifth overall in the weight class to earn his second-straight All-American honor.
