PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women’s Rugby Club went 3-0 Saturday afternoon to win the prestigious Cianci 7s rugby tournament at Riverside Middle School. Sevens rugby features a fast paced, abbreviated version of the game, with 7 on a side rather than the usual 15.
In the first game of the day, the Hawks defeated Brown University by a 15-5 score. Two scores by senior Sara Panaccio, and a long scoring run by freshman Emily Holland helped cap off the victory.
RWU’s next opponent was the University of Rhode Island “B” side, which featured multiple scores from senior captain Liz Morgan and sophomore Brittany Gallin. Junior Captain Alison Littleton, sophomore Brittany Vail, and Holland each added a try to give the Hawks a 34-0 victory.
With the win, RWU advanced to the Championship Final against a determined URI “A” team. Long runs by Littleton and Gallin, along with a stout defense, gave RWU a 10-5 advantage until late in the match, when Holland scored off a pass from senior Courtney Cooney to clinch the win, 15-5.
