Lacroix Posts 2-2 Record at National Championship

Bristol, RI- RWU senior Andy Lacroix (Salem, NH) went 2-2 at the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa, March 2-3.

Wrestling at 141, Lacroix first met Tyler Branham from The College of New Jersey who earned a close 3-0 win en route to his eighth-place finish. Lacroix then defeated Nicholas Sanchez of Heidelberg College, 7-4, before pinning Derrick Smith of Oswego Sate at 3:55 to advance to the All-American round. There he dropped a 9-2 decision to the eventual third-place finisher, Jared Creason of Coe College.

Lacroix's 3.5 points placed RWU 42nd, marking the team's fifth-best finish in its 16-year history. Johnson & Wales, who won the New England College Conference Wrestling Association Championships hosted by Roger Williams Feb. 17-18, was the top New England team with 25 points – good for 14th overall.

Lacroix earned a wild-card selection to the tournament from NECCWA after posting a fourth-place finish at the NECCWA Championships. Only three additional New England wrestlers earned a wild-card selection and Lacroix is the first wrestler in NECCWA history to earn the selection as a fourth-place finisher.

Last season Lacroix finished third in the National Championship, tying Cory DeBias (3rd in 2003) with the highest finish in school history. He defeated the #4, #5 and #8 seeds to help earn All-American honors and finish the season with a record of 41-8 (.837).
