CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite dealing with numerous stoppages in action, the Roger Williams University Men's and Women's Track & Field teams put together solid performances at the New England Championships this past weekend.
On the men's side, Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.) repeated his All-New England performance from a year ago with a sixth-place finish in the Triple Jump, going for a distance of 45' 2.25” and nearly breaking his own school record of 45' 3.5”. With his performance, he now becomes the program's first two-time All-New England athlete.
The 4 x 800 Meter Relay team of Jonathan Ellis (Yonkers, N.Y.), John Ferguson (Bethel, Conn.), Dan Herbein (York, Maine), and Steven Carnevale (Easton, Mass.) just missed out on receiving All-New England honors with a tenth-place finish of 8:07.03, 12 seconds better than the previous school record.
“These guys ran super today,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “Senior Ellis led off with his fastest 800 ever. That's the best race I have seen him run on the track. It got the other guys fired up to break the school record.”
The men's 4 x 400 Meter Relay team of Ian Mooney (Belmar, N.J.), Luis Garcia (Roxbury, Conn.), Eric Patnode (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and Justin Davis (Ashland, Mass.) also placed tenth with a school-record time of 3:28.84.
“Three freshmen and one sophomore make up this group, so it's a good bet the record will be broken again & again over the next couple of years,” said Livingston.
After being seeded 30th in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, Thomas Maybury (East Longmeadow, Mass.) exceeded expectations by finishing 15th in the event with a time of 9:58.70, missing breaking his own school record by 0.5 seconds.
In the throws portion of the meet, Emil Pornelos (Hartford, Vt.) competed for the Hawks in both the Shot Put and the Discus Throw. He placed 14th in both events with a heave of 44' 3.25” at the Shot Put and 134' 3” at the Discus. His brother Jon Pornelos (White River Junction, Vt.) took 16th place at the Javelin Throw, tossing for a distance of 161' 10”.
For the women, sophomore Maggie Blinn (Billerica, Mass.) finished 15th in the 400 Meter Hurdles in a school-record time of 1:07.59, just missing the qualifying mark for the ECAC meet. The 4 x 400 Meter Relay quad of Blinn, Maria Lobalbo (Bethel, Conn.), Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.), and Anne Cassidy (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up a 10th-place finished with a season-best time of 4:16.99.
Liliana Rutler (Wyckoff, N.J.) competed in the 10K Run for the second year in a row for the Hawks and finished 18th in 41:51.01. Cassidy pulled off a 20th-place finish for RWU in the 400 Meter Dash, clocking in at 1:01.06.
In the Javelin Throw, Courtney Anderson (Palmer, Mass.) hurled the rod a distance of 95' 4” to take 16th place in her first New England Championship.
“This was a long meet with two stoppages for severe weather,” said Livingston. “The relay teams had to wait over eight hours to run due to the delays. They exceeded expectations, ending the meet with the two school records. Several athletes just missed earning All-New England Honors, but most are underclassman and have several more opportunities to make it. I am very pleased with everyone's effort today. It's nice to see things come together and have them perform at a high level.”
Seven Hawks will represent Roger Williams University at the ECAC meet on May 19-20.
