Men’s Track & Field takes seventh at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Men's Track & Field team grabbed seventh place Saturday afternoon at the Coast Guard Academy Spring Invitational, highlighted by another qualification for the ECAC Championships.

Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.) took second place in the Triple Jump with a leap of 44' 11.5”, earning a berth to the ECAC Championships with his performance. He also placed eighth in the Long Jump, going for a distance of 19' 3.25”.

At the 400 Meter Hurdles, Dan Rathbun (Lakeville, Mass.) grabbed sixth place in the event, finishing with a time of 1:02.40. Following two places behind was Dan Felleman (Medway, Mass.) with a time of 1:03.97. Tim Clarkin (Coventry, R.I.) and Thomas Maybury (East Longmeadow, Mass.)  took ninth and tenth with respective times of 1:04.62 and 1:05.79.

At the 100 Meter Dash, Eric Patnode (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed tenth with a time of 11.75. Also coming up with a tenth place finish was Zach N'Guia (New Bedford, Mass.) this time at the 110 Meter Hurdles at 19.72.

At the throws portion of the meet, Emil Pornelos (Hartford, Vt.) came up big for Roger Williams, leading the team in scoring with ten of the team's 31 total points.  The sophomore took fourth place in the discus with a toss of 128' 7”, sixth in the shot put at 41' 1” and rounded out his day with a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw with a solid effort of 131' 5”. 

“Emil had an all-around solid day,” said Throws Coach Tom Conley. “He didn't have a breakout performance in any one event but he scored in every event he was entered in.  You can't ask for much more than that.” 

Emil's brother, Jon Pornelos (Hartford, Vt.) had another strong showing in the Javelin.  The freshman grabbed eight points for Roger Williams with a second place finish in the event with a toss of 175'6”.  He also had a personal best in the shot put at 39' 2.5”, good for ninth place.

For the third week in a row, Robert Strother (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) had a personal best in the Hammer Throw.  His heave of 104' 0” was good for 14th place.  He was also just inches off his best throws in both the Javelin (113' 2”) and Shot Put (32' 5.75”).

Freshman Andrew Mirabito (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had his best day yet with two personal bests.  He sent the discus out to a new best of 87' 3” and flung the hammer out to 85' 6”.

Roger Williams next competes at the Corsair Invitational on April 9, hosted by the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
