BRISTOL, R.I. – Highlighting a weekend in which the Roger Williams University Sailing competed in four regattas was a win at the Horn Trophy, along with two other regattas in which the Hawks finished third and fourth.
At the Horn Trophy, the Hawks solidified their victory with a record of 16-3. The Hawks went a perfect 5-0 in their first round before a 3-2 showing the second round. In the final round, the Hawks went 4-1 to advance to the Gold Round Robin. The team defeated Boston College 2-0 in their semifinal round before going on to They then went on to defeat Tufts in two very close races during the final round to win the Horn Trophy. Sailing for the Hawks were Andrew Tamblyn (Little Silver, N.J.) with Josh Gershuny (Newburyport, Mass.), Dylan Vogel (Jamestown, R.I.) with Wendy Reuss (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.), and Annie Schmidt (Larkspur, Calif.) with Bianca Rom (Amityville, N.Y.).
At the Hap Moore Trophy Team Race, hosted by Coast Guard, Roger Williams came away with a third-place finish. Competing for Roger Williams were Sean Bouchard (Bermuda), Tyler Macdonald (Newport Beach, Calif.), George Saunders (San Diego, Calif.), Samantha Bobo (Cohasset, Mass.), Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), and Chelsea Maguire (Duxbury, Mass.). In the first Round Robin the Hawks compiled an 8-2 record, putting them in third place and advancing them to the Gold Round Robin. In the final round, the Hawks earned three more wins to take third overall.
At the Freshman Intersectional hosted by Bowdoin, the Hawks finished in fourth place overall. The team spent a busy weekend on the water, with nine races on Saturday and eleven more on Sunday. In A Division, the Hawks finished third, led by Connor Brady (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Nicole Sikowitz (Manasquan, N.J.) totaling 109 points, including 12 top-five finishes with three wins among them. At B Division, the Hawks came in third as well, led by Cole Rice (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Shanna Rae Savignano (Manhasset, N.Y.) totaling 136 points. The duo won two races while placing fifth or better in seven races.
The Hawks were also in the Rhode Island State Championships this weekend at Salve Regina. In the NEISA intersectional competition, the Hawks finished 13th out of the 20 teams competing. In the A Division, the Hawks took 13th, with Eric Schwarm (Freeport, Maine), Megan Carlson (New Providence, N.J.), and Megan Place (Wilton Manors, Fla.) tallying 126 points and a fifth-place finish in the fifth race. In the B Division, Ian Hollerbach (Grosse Point Park, Mich.) and Kyle Gershuny (Newburyport, Mass.) finished in 13th place with 134 points. The pair managed to take third in the second race of the competition.
