BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Roger Williams University Men's Cross Country team competed at the 2011 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship Saturday afternoon, coming away with 17th place overall in the field, tying their second-best finish in the Regionals.
The first runner to cross the finish line for Roger Williams was freshman Kevin Terbush (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), placed 102nd overall for the Hawks with a time of 26:51.82. Following him two places after was John Ferguson (Bethel, Conn.), coming in at 26:51.89.
Jack Dunleavy (Orange, Conn.) finished in 115th place for the Hawks on the day, crossing the finish line in a time of 27:03.66. Joshua Lopes (South Dennis, Mass.) was next to finish for RWU, finishing in 129th place with a personal best of 27:14.07
Taking 133rd place overall was Sean Doyle (Guilderland, N.Y.) with his time of 27:17:12, also a personal best. Steven Carnevale (Easton, Mass.) and Jeff Pini (Wellesley, Mass.) were the final two Hawks to finish on the day, with respective finishes of 185th (28:16.62) and 242nd (29:37.26).
Williams claimed the overall team title with a score of 88, edging Middlebury by one point. Middlebury's Michael Schmidt won the race with a time of 24:39.95.
“The goal going in was top-15 and we got close,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “The top-five split was only 26 seconds, which is a huge factor in how well teams place in a meet with this many teams. We were the only team in the top-20 to have four freshmen and one sophomore score.”
“As with the women's field, the New England region is by far the largest in the country. It's not an easy race to run, but they held their own out there today. The guys want to be a top-10 team next year at this meet and I think that is something that we can most certainly attain.”
