Sailing competes in blustery weekend

BRISTOL, R.I. – On a weekend where New England was treated to an early winter storm, the Roger Williams University Sailing braved the elements and sailed in four regattas on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hawks had success at the Dave Perry Trophy at Yale University. George Saunders (San Diego, Calif.) and Chelsea Maguire (Duxbury, Mass.) of A Division contributed 111 points for the Hawks, placing eighth. Saunders and Maguire placed fourth or better in three of their 12 races. Andrew Tamblyn (Little Silver, N.J.) and Joshua Gershuny (Newburyport, Mass.) had better success in B Division, taking second place. The duo earned 102 points with wins in their ninth and tenth races. Both A and B Division aided to the Hawks' 213 points and overall fourth-place finish.

The 70th Professor Erwin Schell Trophy held at MIT proved to be another successful day for the Hawks as the placed 5th out of 18 teams. In A Division, Sean Bouchard (Bermuda), Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.), and Tyler Wilson (Woodville, Mass.) sailed fabulously as the overall division winners. Bouchard, Stannard, and Wilson earned a total of 85 points and finished in the top two in seven out of 18 races. In B Division, Wilson, Tyler Macdonald (Newport Beach, Calif.), Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI), Sophie Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.), and Jake Bartlein (Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed tenth, totaling 176 points. Overall, the Hawks totaled 261 points.

At the Nickerson Regatta held at Connecticut College, the Hawks placed ninth out of 11 teams with a total of 130 points. Racing started around 10:30 a.m. in a 5-7 knot breeze. Despite the cold weather and the rain that eventually turned to snow, the Hawks made it through successfully. Contributing to the team's ninth-place finish were their three fourth-places and one third place finish in four of their 11 A Division races, totaling 67 points. In B Division, Roger Williams finished with three runner-up finishes among their 11 races, earning a total of 63 points.

At Harvard University, the Roger Williams sailing team participated in the Victorian Urn Regatta as they placed tenth out of 18 teams. Conditions proved to be somewhat favorable for the Hawks, though the breeze ranged from 4-17 knots over the course of the weekend. In A Division, Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda), Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), Jaye Fahey (Keyport, N.J.), and Rachel Perry (Tampa, Fla.) combined to total 89 points and place seventh in their division. The quartet placed fourth or better in four out of their 11 races. In B Division, Perry, Fahey, Annie Schmidt (Larkspur, Calif.), and Wendy Reuss (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) earned 123 points, solidifying a 12th place finish. Combined, the Hawks earned 212 points.

The Hawks continue with several regattas this weekend featuring 17th Judy Lutz Trophy at Chicago YC in Radials, the 49th Glen Foster Trophy at Chicago in Lasers, and the Narragansett Bay Open at Salve Regina.
