Equestrian ties for third in season opener

REHOBOTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Equestrian team kicked off the 2011-12 season with a tie for third place Saturday afternoon at the Johnson & Wales University Show, earning 26 points along with the hosts.

The Hawks picked up two individual wins on the day, with freshmen Lyndsey Burns (Newtown, Conn.) and Kira Jewett (Falmouth, Mass.) earning wins at Open Fences and Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter. In addition, the fifth-place finish for Rachael Asadorian (East Greenwich, R.I.) pointed her out of Novice Flat and into Intermediate Flat.

At Intermediate Flat, Chelsea Francis (Bristol, R.I.) took runner up in the division, while Jacqui Allred (Paoli, Pa.) earned third at Open Fences. Francis also finished fifth in Intermediate Fences. Burns and Lenny Carlucci (Fairfield, Conn.) each picked up fourth place finishes at Open Flat and Walk-Trot, respectively.

Alexandra Pastor (Westhampton, N.Y.) finished in fifth and sixth place respectively at Intermediate Flat and Intermediate Fences, while Shelby Dumond (Colchester, Conn.) took fifth at Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter.

Next Sunday, the Hawks will be up the road at Windswept Farm at the Brown University/Rhode Island College Show.
