NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team participated in the Connecticut College Individual Men's Tennis Tournament on September 17th.
Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.) was defeated in the first round by Coast Guard's Blake Maurer (Fort Worth, Texas) 6-3, 6-1 in the #1 division. Maurer was then beaten in the finals [3-6, 6-1, (10-5)] by Jeff Weisberger (Wayne, N.J.) of Connecticut College.
In the #2 bracket, Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) came in third place after losing to the eventual champion in the semifinals, and then defeating Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) of Manhattanville College 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation finals. Connecticut College's Joshua Suneby (Wellesley, Mass.) was named the winner after beating Nick Martin (State College, Pa.) of Coast Guard Academy 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Josh Fischer (Roanoke, Texas) of Coast Guard Academy earned first place in the #3 division, after defeating Gabriel Pinto (Quito, Equador) of Manhattanville College, [5-7, 6-4, (10-5)] in the final match up.
The Coast Guard Academy earned another win during the tournament in the 4 bracket, as Chris Hoffman (El Lago, T.X.) defeated Manhattanville's Alfonso Hidrobo (Quito, Equador) 6-4, 6-3 during the final round.
In the fifth level of competition, Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) secured a place in the finals after defeating David Blystone (Marlton, N.J.) of the Coast Guard Academy 7-5, 7-6, (4). Swanson then earned runner-up honors as Connecticut College's John Cangelosi (Estero, Fla.) took the title, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Freshman Zach Bussiere (Colchester, Vt.) earned Roger Williams' first win of the day in the 6 division. In the semifinals, he beat Gabriel Berlingeri of Manhattanville College 6-2, 6-2. During the final match, Bussiere defeated Coast Guard's Matt Faha (Stafford, .VA.) 6-2, 7-5.
The Hawks' second tournament victory came from freshman Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, N.Y.) in the #7 singles bracket. By scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 Bull conquered the contestants in his division from the Coast Guard Academy.
The final #8 singles bracket saw two winners, as Connecticut College's Jeff Basch (Elking Park, P.A.) and Mike Fratt (Bethesda, M.D.) each won both of their sets against opponents.
In the four doubles brackets during the tournament, Connecticut College dominated with three wins. The Coast Guard Academy emerged victorious in the #2 slot over RWU's Swanson and Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.).
