BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU Softball team earned a split with visiting New England College in Sunday afternoon’s doubleheader. The host Hawks dropped the first game, 5-4, before taking game two, 8-3. RWU moves to 14-13 overall and 6-6 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, while NEC moves to 7-15 and 6-6.
New England College scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure its come-from-behind win in game one. Facing a 4-1 deficit to start the seventh inning, Pilgrims sophomores Chelsea Torrico (Mt. Washington, Mass.) and Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) reached base, before junior Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.) hit a double to score the two RBI. She would later score on a single by freshman Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, Pa.), who also came around to score on a two-out double by senior Kristen Purdy (Candia, N.H.).
After its three-run sixth-inning, including singles by senior Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.), sophomore Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.), senior Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.), RWU was held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) suffered the loss, while freshman Kristen Dehm (Milford, Conn.) earned the win.
RWU was the first to score in the second game after Caprice reached on an error to start the bottom of the first inning and eventually made her way around, scoring on a Teves’ single. After both teams were held scoreless in the second inning, the Hawks exploded for four in the third – kicked off with a homerun by Pirez, her team-leading seventh on the season.
The teams traded runs in the fourth and fifth inning and both registered two in the sixth before Hawks freshman Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) retired three-straight, including one strike-out, to finish the game in the seventh. Pilgrims freshman Megan Kinnon (Longdonderry, N.H.) suffered the loss.
RWU returns to action Tuesday, travelling south on Rt. 136 to Newport, R.I. where it will face Salve Regina in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. New England College returns home to Henniker, N.H. to host Regis College in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
