BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team had another successful showing this past weekend, with a win a two second-place finishes among their five regattas.
The team started off the weekend with a win at the C Level Team Race and a runner-up finish at the B Level Team Race, hosted by RWU. At the C Level regatta, Zach Shapiro (Darien, Conn.), Andrew Tamblyn (Little Silver, N.J.), Cameron Pimentel (Paget, Bermuda), and Eric Schwarm (Freeport, Maine) skippered their way alongside crews Megan Carlson (New Providence, N.J.), Alex Feldman (West Nyack, N.Y.), Dan Goldman (Bradenton, Fla.), and Carleton Huntsberger (North Port, Maine). The eight Hawks combined for a perfect 12-0 record in the race, besting second-place McGill College by five wins.
At the B Level race, Skippers Shapiro. Pimentel, Tamblyn, and Ryan McHorney (Southboro, Mass.), along with crews Schwarm, Goldman, Carlson, Huntsberger, and Feldman combined for a 3-1 in the round robin. Though the Hawks earned wins over Dartmouth College, McGill College, and Yale University, the day ended with a three-way tie between, RWU, Dartmouth, and Yale. Dartmouth ultimately won the tie-breaker, with the Hawks finishing in second place.
At the Aaron Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion University, the Hawks took second place in the event among the eight teams. In the first round robin, Roger Williams was tied for fourth place with a 3-4 record, but a strong performance in the second round robin allowed the Hawks to jump up to second, going 5-2 in the round and 8-6 overall. In the final round, the Hawks ran off a 4-3 record to finish 12-9 on the day, five wins behind regatta winner St. Mary's College.
At the Admiral Moore Trophy, Roger Williams placed fifth in the regatta out of ten teams. The Hawks earned six wins in the event, with victories over Bowdoin College, Georgetown University, the University of Michigan, U.S. Naval Academy, N.Y. Maritime Academy, and the University of Connecticut.
The final regatta of the weekend for RWU was a 12th-place showing at the Boston Dinghy Cup, hosted by Boston College, where the 18 teams sailed 17 races among three divisions. George Saunders (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Megan Place (Wilton Manors, Fla.) finished tenth in A Division, winning the fifth race of the day among their nine top-seven finishes. Coming in 12th at B Division were Tucker Blagden (Marblehead, Mass.) and Katie Palmer (Warwick, R.I.), who ran off eight finishes in the top ten, with the best a fourth-place result in the tenth race of the day. Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda) and Emerald Epke (Tiverton, R.I.) combined to place 11th at C Division, placing in the top-six eight times in the regatta including a pair of runner-up finishes in the seventh and 11th races.
Roger Williams will be two regattas this weekend, hosting the 10th Ferrarone Team Racing Intersectional and at Coast Guard for the 13th Southern NE Team Race Intersectional.
