NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Roger Williams Women’s Tennis team was defeated by Colby-Sawyer on Wednesay in the TCCC Semifinals.  The Hawks held a 2-1 advantage after the doubles matches, but Colby-Sawyer took four of the singles matches to get the victory 5-2.  The number one seed knocked off the Hawks who were the number five seed and ended the season for the Hawks.

BRISTOL, R.I. - Four members of the Roger Williams University Women’s Tennis team have been named to the All-TCCC team for their performances this season.  Junior Leah Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, Conn.), Freshman Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.), Sophomore Caitlin Osepchuk (Ocean Grove, N.J.), and Sophomore Amanda Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) have all received All-Conference Honors.

BRISTOL, RI – The Commonwealth Coast Conference has named five Roger Williams University athletes as Athletes of the Week. Three women have been named TCCC Rookie of the Week in their respective sports, as well as two other women capturing the title of TCCC Libero of the Week and Runner of the Week.

BRISTOL, R.I. – Head Coach Neil Caniga has named Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) and Leah Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, Conn.) to be the captains of the Roger Williams University Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams for the 2009-10 season.  Baker, a senior has accumulated an overall record of 40-19 in singles and 22-12 in doubles over his three years here.  Ribchinsky, a junior, has compiled a record of 22-29 in singles and 27-25 in doubles competition.

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women’s Tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to visiting Nichols College in a TCCC match on Tuesday evening.  The team dropped two of the three doubles matches, and split the singles matches against a top notch team from Nichols.

Due to the impending inclement weather, two of Saturday's athletic events have been postponed. The Equestrian team's URI show has been postponed until Sunday, October 4th. The Women's Tennis team's match against Gordon College has also been postponed until Friday, October 9th at 4 p.m.

Athletes of the Week
Ryan Weekes
Women's Basketball

BRISTOL, R.I. - Ryan Weekes’ (Worcester, Mass.) excellent performance this past week has gained her the recognition of RWU Female Athlete of the Week. As a sophomore guard on the Women’s Basketball Team, Weekes posted strong stats in games against Salve Regina and The University of New England.

 

Wednesday night at Salve Regina Weeks put up a career-high 22 points for the Hawks and also recorded a team-high nine rebounds. She sank two clutch free throws with just 21 seconds remaining to bring the Hawks to within one, but a talented Seahawks team pulled out the victory in the end.

 

The Nor’easters  of New England were another challenge for the Hawks, but Weekes got the team rolling with a jumper within the first six seconds of the game. She went on to lead the team with 16 points, shooting 50% from the field, while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

 

Weekes and the Hawks play their final home game of the regular season Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Anna Maria College.

Phillip Jacques
Men's Swimming & Diving

Bristol, R.I. – Freshman Phillip Jacques (Durham, Maine) was named RWU Male Athlete of the Week after posting a first-place finish in three individual events and a relay, helping the Men’s Swimming and Diving Team to their seventh-straight victory, defeating Trinity College (CT) Saturday afternoon.

 

The Hawks began the meet well as Jacques and his teammates posted a first-place time 3:43.48 in the opening  400-yard Medley Relay. He went on to take first place in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:09.61.

 

His Backstroke proved strongest of the day as he won both the 50-yard and 200-yard events with times of 25.90 and 2:00.21, respectively.  In the end, Jacques helped with 38 team points as the Hawks came away with the 181-115 victory over the Bantams.  

 

Jacques and the team return to the water Feb. 19 for the start of the New England Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt.
