CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Sailing Team hit the waters in Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday for the NEISA Atlantic Coast Championships hosted by Harvard. There were ten races run on Saturday, and a lack of wind on Sunday caused those results to stand as no races were run on Sunday. The team managed to accumulate 176 points which was good for ninth overall in the regatta.

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team was in action at three events over the weekend that was highlighted by Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Luke Lawrence (Palm City, Fla.) who were in Corpus Christi, Texas for the ICSA Men’s Singlehanded National Championships. The team was also racing at the Crews Regatta at MIT and the R.I. State Championships hosted by Salve Regina University.

Junior Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), Sophomore Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.) and Freshman John Bankert (Annapolis, Md.) received the recognition after their performance at the 68th Erwin Schell Trophy over the weekend.

With their performance at the Erwin Schell Trophy, the team secured a spot at the NEISA Atlantic Coast Championships in two weeks.

BRISTOL, R.I. - On Friday the Roger Williams University Sailing team will be holding a christening ceremony to give their new fleet a proper introduction to the waters of Mt. Hope Bay. This marks a major milestone in the program’s history as this is the first set of new boats acquired by the university. Previously, a set of boats that were purchased from Connecticut College were in use.

Junior Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and sophomore teammate Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.) were named the New England Interscholastic Sailing Assocation’s Coed Sailors of the Week due to their strong showing at the Navy Fall Intersectional.

BRISTOL, R.I. - Roger Williams University’s Maria Petrillo (Mystic, Conn.) has been named to the 2009 ICSA All-Academic Sailing First team. The History major who graduated this past May maintained an overall GPA of 3.79 in her four years at RWU.

Women's Basketball
BRISTOL, R.I. - Ryan Weekes’ (Worcester, Mass.) excellent performance this past week has gained her the recognition of RWU Female Athlete of the Week. As a sophomore guard on the Women’s Basketball Team, Weekes posted strong stats in games against Salve Regina and The University of New England.
Wednesday night at Salve Regina Weeks put up a career-high 22 points for the Hawks and also recorded a team-high nine rebounds. She sank two clutch free throws with just 21 seconds remaining to bring the Hawks to within one, but a talented Seahawks team pulled out the victory in the end.
The Nor’easters of New England were another challenge for the Hawks, but Weekes got the team rolling with a jumper within the first six seconds of the game. She went on to lead the team with 16 points, shooting 50% from the field, while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.
Weekes and the Hawks play their final home game of the regular season Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Anna Maria College.

Men's Swimming & Diving
Bristol, R.I. – Freshman Phillip Jacques (Durham, Maine) was named RWU Male Athlete of the Week after posting a first-place finish in three individual events and a relay, helping the Men’s Swimming and Diving Team to their seventh-straight victory, defeating Trinity College (CT) Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks began the meet well as Jacques and his teammates posted a first-place time 3:43.48 in the opening 400-yard Medley Relay. He went on to take first place in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:09.61.
His Backstroke proved strongest of the day as he won both the 50-yard and 200-yard events with times of 25.90 and 2:00.21, respectively. In the end, Jacques helped with 38 team points as the Hawks came away with the 181-115 victory over the Bantams.
Jacques and the team return to the water Feb. 19 for the start of the New England Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt.
